40 PAGES OF PILGRIMAGE

For over 10 years the idea of pilgrimage has intrigued me. It came to me in the summer, whilst I was having one of those restless nights and at 5.30 am and I went down to the beach to dance into the morning sun. There was no one around while I danced my way back to feeling what was true for me … and the answer came. I needed to walk the Camino pilgrimage by the end of this year, and I wanted to share my journey with others in a special way.”

In September and October 2015, Hazel embarked on and completed her pilgrimage journey. 40 pages were created, documented and sent out to Page Pilgrims from all around the world, who had chosen a page number from the empty book and bought a page, surrendering to what the outcome would be as Hazel walked and documented each day as her visual journal unfolded.

Hazel is currently composing and writing the book to tell the story of her pilgrimage and why she did it. See more here.

About the Project

40 Pages
Hazel decided to make this project so you can be part of the pilgrimage too. As far as she knows, the Camino pilgrimage experience has never been documented visually like this and it is Hazel's intention, to not only document the journey, but to share it with you in a special way. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the famous Camino pilgrimage and the creation of a living work of art that challenges the interpretation of the physical and spiritual journey to reveal itself on 40 pages of a book. The walk between beginning and end will mark the making of life in transformation. Hazel in turn will be making the marks of this path.

Hazel will journal the pilgrimage each day by documenting it in her sketch book. One page for each day. The 40 days will be interpreted through illustration, poetry, writing and could include anything she might find to stick in the book along the way. This will be a unique document of the inner and outer landscapes of one woman walking the way of the pilgrimage and ultimately will be shared with everyone who participates in the 40 Pages Of Pilgrimage project. The whole story will be revealed at Lighthouse Poole with the presentation of the book followed by the exhibition.

40 Days
Hazel will walk the Camino Portugues, 617 km, from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela and complete the journey to the Atlantic Ocean by walking the Camino de Fisterra from Santiago de Compostela to Cabo Fisterra which is a further 90 km. This makes a total of 707 km (Average 17.68 km per day).

Who knows what will happen on each day, but what is guaranteed is that life will never be the same for Hazel and she invites you to join her on this journey. Witness and support the unfolding of a journey through lines dots and marks – the way of the artist.

Each day will surely bring it's own journey, challenges and jubilations, the aim of the diary is to be an authentic expression of the path that Hazel walks. Whatever is going on inside and whatever is seen outside will be in the melting pot, edited and translated onto the page, this could be anything from a simple mark to a dramatic expression, and a weaving though different emotions. There are no expectations, only that this becomes a true reflection of the walk, the authentic way.

After the pilgrimage intentions
